Tips for a Sustainable Camping

camping – Gabriel Ricardo Morales Fallon

Contact with nature is something extremely fundamental for our physical and mental health, and one of the best ways to do it besides going out to a park, hugging a tree or going out into the countryside is nothing more and nothing less than going camping. And it is that going camping not only implies contact with nature and that pleasant connection with mother earth, it is also for many of us immersed in cities and in the stress of working life, the closest we can have to a great adventure of survival.

However, our lack of experience and knowledge, adding the need for our explorer and wild boy makes us make certain mistakes that can affect both the environment and our pleasant trip; from this I bring the following tips to keep in mind during our camping:

Fire

Eating cold is not pleasant for many, besides what would be a camp without the usual campfire, masmelos or sausages skewered on a stick? they would not make any sense, only that what costs us so much to turn on we usually forget to turn it off or at least turn it off well so we must take into account the following to avoid a possible forest fire:

  • Throw water moderately over the campfire until you make sure it’s off, the embers no longer sound, and smoke no longer comes out.
  • In case you use stones to surround the campfire do not forget about them, since in addition to being hot there are usually remains of embers still hot under them.
  • If you do not have water on hand you can make a mixture of sand and soil which should be thrown on the campfire and mix with the embers until they are extinguished.

The way to the bathroom

Nature is beautiful but not much when it makes the call in our bodies, so we must keep in mind the following so that our nature does not contaminate nature:

  • Be sure to bring the necessary items such as plastic bags, toilet paper and a shovel, in case you do not have these last 2 can turn to the resources of nature such as leaves, branches and sticks.
  • A hole of approximately 15 cm deep should be dug in which its need should be made and then covered with soil; this hole should not be less than 60 meters from some water source as it can contaminate it.
  • If you used leaves, branches and sticks you can throw them inside the hole but if you used toilet paper you must put it in the plastic bag (preferably hermetic seal) and throw it in the nearest garbage dump, I know that taking them is not the most pleasant but it is the safest thing for nature.
  • Be sure to clean your hands with antibacterial gel while you can wash your hands.

Wastes

A pleasant trip to nature can become an unprecedented polluting event so we must make an adequate management of our waste, given this I advise you to take into account the following:

  • Make sure you carry enough plastic bags to store the trash generated
  • Go to that recycling spirit and sort the garbage.
  • Avoid contamination of water sources, so please do not wash your personal belongings or bodies in the water with chemicals.
  • Remember that unfortunately garbage calls garbage and makes consciously or unconsciously many people throw garbage where they see a polluted, dirty and full of it environment.

And you, what do you do especially to take care of nature when you go camping?
