Tires, an environmental problem

Llantas – Gabriel Morales Fallon

One of the consequences that left us the planned obsolescence, was the tires. It is true that it is a technological experiment since it contains in its structure different materials that guarantee its performance such as natural and synthetic rubber, coal, textile fibers such as: nylon, polyester, rayon and steel wire.  However, its useful life is short and the creation of this material makes its recycling complicated.

Currently there is no standard and there is not enough information of specific places for the proper storage of these, which is counterproductive since the montallantas or even we get rid of them anywhere, representing a focus of spread of pests such as: moscos or rodents.

But what can be done with this material so that the environment is not affected? Many will think that the solution is to burn them to take advantage of their materials, but burning tires  in an uncontrolled way, in addition to the  pollution  it causes, generates carcinogenic substances.

There are places such as ladrilleras and cement factories where this material can be used as a fuel since they have the technology to control the gases emitted and it can also be used as a mixture for road construction. What is intended is to separate its components (rubber, fibers, steel) and reuse them, in: footwear, tracks, synthetic courts, stables, tubes, etc.

For now a low percentage of tires is recycled at the artisanal level in the elaboration of tables, chairs, gardening, parks and espadrilles (peasants’ shoes). However, a material that is discarded by tons deserves a good use, since it is a versatile material that with a good application can give superior characteristics to the products.

The mere fact of recycling the rubber produces an excellent waterproof, flexible and durable, and can be used to waterproof the ceilings to prevent water leaks in addition to being a good thermal insulator, it can also be used as an anti-vibration material.

We must inform ourselves about which places are appropriate for the storage  of this and hopefully the  industries as well as are responsible for manufacturing and selling them, will also be involved in the collaboration of the recycling of their product, and with this the government also has a responsibility to control and take advantage of these materials so that they do not contaminate the  environment.
